Ubiquity International is excited to announce the availability of university credit. Through an alliance with Eastern Washington University, we are able to offer students, teachers and other professionals the opportunity to receive academic credit while traveling on an Ubiquity International tour. Earning credit through EWU confirms the educational value of Ubiquity International tours and allows teachers and students to benefit from the tour outside the tour itself.

The Eisenhower Center at Eastern Washington University administers the International Field Studies program. Courses at EWU are designed to complement and enhance the educational value students, teachers and professionals receive from the tour experience.

High School students can earn high school or college credit; university students can earn university credit; teachers and professionals can earn post-baccalaureate, graduate credit. In certain cases, middle school students may also earn credit.

FAQs about Ubiquity International and EWU Credit

What do I do to choose a course?
When you visit the EWU site, you will see many courses listed. The short answer is: the sky’s the limit! Truly. You choose what course fits your needs and will give you the most for what you want out of your Ubiquity International tour.

Very importantly, understand that there are three phases to receiving credit from EWU. They are:

Pre-travel
Travel
Post-travel

What happens during these phases is determined by the professor of the course you choose. Generally speaking, Pre-travel means researching your destination(s) or a subject, such as art history of Italy.

The Travel phase is, well, just that. But you must also plan to keep a detailed journal and take as many photographs as possible. You are not on your own in this phase. Every Ubiquity International tour is accompanied by a Cultural Specialist. The group meets with this person several nights a week in a symposium where the day's events, excursions and cultural highlights are discussed. There is ample time to fully understand the destinations visited.

These will be used by you in the Post-travel phase, and potentially well after the tour is over. Depending on the course, students may be required to give PowerPoint presentations or other demonstrations of what they learned while traveling. Teachers may be required to write lessons plans or develop a short curriculum.

How do I submit my materials?

EWU allows online via Blackboard. See details at EWU.

What happens if the tour is cancelled and I have already registered at EWU?

EWU understands that under rare circumstances a tour may be cancelled. If this is the case, you simply notify EWU and they will give you a refund (see their site for details) for that course.

What are material submission deadlines?

Generally, materials required for the course in the Post-travel phase are due by September 15 following the completion of the tour. Therefore, it is wise to register as soon as you plan to participate in a Ubiquity International tour. Other deadlines may exist, so consult the individual course descriptions.

What if I already participated in a Ubiquity International tour, can I still receive credit?

Possibly: you should contact EWU to find out if you can obtain credit for a past tour. Key to gaining that credit is that the tour did not occur too far in the past, that you kept a good journal and have material that you can use in creating your Post-travel portfolio as required by the course. The bottom line: Ask EWU. It’s worth it!
